Algunas personas comenzaron a relacionar ambos acontecimientos.

Sahih al-Bukhari y Sahih Muslim.

Aisha رضي الله عنها narró que el Mensajero de Allah ﷺ realizó dos rak‘ah.

  2. Comienza diciendo:

Allahu Akbar.

Sami‘a Allahu liman hamidah.

Y después:

Rabbana wa laka al-hamd.

Vuelve a levantarte.

As-Salatu Jami‘ah.

Rezar.

Hacer du‘a.

Hacer dhikr.

Decir Allahu Akbar.

Pedir perdón a Allah.

Hacer istighfar.

Dar sadaqah.

Arrepentirse sinceramente.

“Cuando el Sol sea oscurecido.”

Corán 81:1

Y Allah dice:

Haz wudu.

Reza Salat al-Kusuf.

Recuerda a Allah.

Haz du‘a.

Pide perdón.

Haz dhikr.

Allahumma-ghfir lana warhamna wa tub ‘alayna, innaka anta at-Tawwabu ar-Rahim.

“Oh Allah, perdónanos, ten misericordia de nosotros y acepta nuestro arrepentimiento. Ciertamente Tú eres Quien acepta el arrepentimiento, el Misericordioso.”

Y Allah sabe más.

 Salat al-Kusuf: The Eclipse Prayer

What Should a Muslim Do During a Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse will soon take place, an event which many people will observe as an extraordinary astronomical phenomenon.

For a Muslim, an eclipse is also an opportunity to remember Allah, reflect upon His signs, seek His forgiveness and revive a Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ which we rarely have the opportunity to practise.

Allah says:

“And among His signs are the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostrate to Allah, Who created them.”

Qur'an 41:37

The Sun and Moon are signs of Allah

A solar eclipse occurred during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on the same day that his son Ibrahim died.

Some people began to associate the eclipse with Ibrahim's death.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rejected this belief and explained:

“The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone.”

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

The Prophet ﷺ taught Muslims that when they witness an eclipse, they should pray, supplicate and remember Allah until it ends.

There is an important lesson in this.

Islam does not associate eclipses with superstition, good fortune, bad fortune, births or deaths.

An eclipse is part of Allah's creation.

The believer looks at the creation and remembers the Creator.

Allah says:

“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and day are signs for people of understanding.”

Qur'an 3:190

Salat al-Kusuf

The prayer performed during a solar eclipse is known as Salat al-Kusuf,

When an eclipse occurred during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, he stood to pray and the Companions prayed behind him.

Aisha رضي الله عنها reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed two rak‘ahs.

This prayer has a distinctive form.

Each rak‘ah contains two rukū‘.

The prayer therefore consists of:

2 rak‘ahs.

4 rukū‘ in total.

4 sujūd in total.

How to perform Salat al-Kusuf

First rak‘ah

  1. Make the intention in your heart to perform Salat al-Kusuf.
  2. Begin by saying:

Allahu Akbar.

  1. Recite Al-Fatihah followed by a long recitation from the Qur'an.
  2. Perform a prolonged rukū‘.
  3. Rise and say:

Sami‘a Allahu liman hamidah.

Then say:

Rabbana wa laka al-hamd.

  1. Remain standing. Recite Al-Fatihah again followed by another passage from the Qur'an. This second recitation should be shorter than the first.
  2. Perform a second prolonged rukū‘, shorter than the first.
  3. Rise from rukū‘ again.
  4. Perform two prostrations.

This completes the first rak‘ah.

Second rak‘ah

Stand and perform the second rak‘ah following the same sequence.

Recite Al-Fatihah and another passage from the Qur'an.

Perform rukū‘.

Stand again.

Recite Al-Fatihah once more followed by another passage from the Qur'an.

Perform the second rukū‘.

Then perform two prostrations.

The recitations and movements of the second rak‘ah should be shorter than those of the first.

After the final prostrations, sit for the tashahhud and complete the prayer with the taslim.

This description of Salat al-Kusuf is based upon the authentic narration of Aisha رضي الله عنها recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

When is Salat al-Kusuf performed?

The prayer is directly connected to the eclipse.

It begins when the eclipse occurs, while prayer, remembrance and supplication continue during the eclipse.

The Prophet ﷺ instructed the believers:

“When you see this, pray and supplicate to Allah until it is over.”

Sahih al-Bukhari.

Once the eclipse has completely ended, Salat al-Kusuf is not made up afterwards as a missed prayer.

Is it performed in congregation?

The Prophet ﷺ performed the eclipse prayer in congregation.

The Companions gathered and prayed behind him.

The announcement was made:

As-Salatu Jami‘ah.

“The prayer is gathering.”

There is no specific adhan or iqamah for Salat al-Kusuf.

A Muslim who is not attending a congregation also has the option of performing the prayer individually.

What else should we do during an eclipse?

The Sunnah does not limit our response to prayer alone.

The Prophet ﷺ taught the believers to remember Allah during an eclipse.

Among the recommended actions are:

Prayer.

Du‘a.

Dhikr.

Takbir.

Seeking Allah's forgiveness.

Istighfar.

Giving sadaqah.

Sincere repentance.

Reflecting upon the signs of Allah.

Aisha رضي الله عنها reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed the believers to remember Allah, say takbir, pray and give charity when witnessing an eclipse.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1044.

Abu Musa رضي الله عنه also reported that the Prophet ﷺ instructed the believers to turn to the remembrance of Allah, supplication and seeking forgiveness when witnessing such signs.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1059.

A sign which should awaken the heart

An eclipse is more than something to watch or photograph.

For the believer, it is one of the signs of Allah.

For a short time, something as familiar as the Sun above us changes before our eyes.

It should remind us of the greatness of Allah and of our complete dependence upon Him.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught that Allah shows His servants these signs so that they fear Him and return to His remembrance.

This does not mean believing that an eclipse predicts a disaster.

It means having khawf of Allah.

It means recognising His greatness.

It means repenting.

It means remembering that this life will end.

And it means remembering the Day when the present order of creation will change completely.

Allah says:

“When the sun is wrapped up in darkness.”

Qur'an 81:1

Allah also says:

“When sight is stunned, and the moon is dimmed, and the sun and the moon are brought together.”

Qur'an 75:7-9

The Sun, the Moon, the stars, the Earth and everything that exists belong to Allah.

All creation follows the order established by Him.

And all creation will come to an end when Allah decrees it.

What should you do when the eclipse arrives?

If you have the opportunity to witness the eclipse, remember the Sunnah.

Make wudu.

Perform Salat al-Kusuf.

Remember Allah.

Make du‘a.

Seek His forgiveness.

Make dhikr.

Give sadaqah.

Repent sincerely from your sins.

Reflect upon Allah's creation.

And remember the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:

“The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah.”

May Allah allow us to recognise His signs, remember His greatness and return sincerely to Him.

Allahumma-ghfir lana warhamna wa tub ‘alayna, innaka anta at-Tawwabu ar-Rahim.

“O Allah, forgive us, have mercy upon us and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.”

And Allah knows best.
